Congratulations to all of you.

Renee from Family House

Love-Squared is officially in it’s 6th month of existence. Donating the first 14 afghans to Family House of Toledo, is by far the best way to celebrate. Check out the photos of Renee, Family House Director, and me with your beautiful afghans. I couldn’t help but smile looking at all the afghans draped over tables. The blankets are so happy, beautiful and begging to be snuggled with. It warms my heart knowing all of your hard work is going to be well loved and treasured for years to come. Congratulations to all of you who have helped make our first six months so perfect.

It’s World Homeless Day.

It is World Homeless Day. What have you done to make an impact? I’ll show you.

All of these afghans and the blankets still being put together will be donated to The Family House on Friday, October 28, 2011.

Love Squared is a work in progress to get afghans to all our nation’s homeless kids one square at a time.

Progress and lists and new deadlines

Hello all!

I am still quite overwhelmed by the amount of squares that were donated for this first afghan project. It’s amazing to see all the colors and the patterns. Currently, there are two afghans being pieced together. I a hoping they will be finished this weekend and we can get two ore in the works. I will say, picking the “right” squares for each afghan is difficult and so much fun!

I have been asked about colors. What color do I receive the most of and which colors do I need or would like. To answer these questions I say any color you wish to work with. I know this doesn’t give you the answer you are looking for. To give an idea of what was received this time around I have grouped the squares by color. I was surprised to see the most squares belonged to the greens, blues and purples while there were hardly any pinks. I thought for sure there would be an over flow of pink.  Any way, here is a list of colors and number of squares that are not currently designated to the 2 afghans being put together right now. I am including photos of the piles as well since my color explanation may not be much help.

Remember this is an on going project and I will always be collecting and knitting/crocheting squares. I a setting the next approximate deadline for February 7, 2012. I know we can collect another 300 squares in that amount of time!

As always, you are all amazing and I could not do this without you!

Round 1 deadline is here

Hello and happy Friday, to all.

The deadline I had set for collection of squares for the first group of squares is here. Any squares donated after today will become our next round of afghans. I am very anxious to see all the squares from the Dragonfly Tea Cottage and Rising Stars Dance Academy.

Starting Monday, I will begin putting the squares together to make the beautiful and colorful afghans. I will document well with photos and posts for all of you to see. I am excited to count the squares to see how many afghans we will be able to donate to Family House. My goal was to have six afghans, but I am pretty sure we will go over that number!

Please check out the Family House facebook page or http://www.familyhousetoledo.org to learn more about them. Love-Squared is proud to donate our afghans to such a wonderful organization. We will continue to donate afghans to Family House as long as their is a need. With YOUR continued support for Love-Squared, we should be able to donate to other wonderful shelters and organizations as well.

A final note. Love-Squared could not exist without all of you. The support you have shown by donating yarn and squares and spreading the word is what keeps us going. Please continue telling everyone you know about us and sending in your squares! There will always be a collection basket at the Dragonfly Tea Cottage on Main St in Sylvania and Rising Stars Dance Academy in Mayberry Square, Sylvania. I will keep you informed of more collection locations as they become available.

Thank you again,

Leah and Love-Squared

All I can say is WOW!

I hate to admit it, but the kindness from people toward strangers always surprises me. I know there are those of us out there who still believe in helping others, but it seems more rare that I run into them. Since starting Love-Squared, I have been overwhelmed by the response. Linda Johnson, CNM and owner of Mother’s Own Birth Center, Conny Beard and Jennifer Blakeman, Owner of the Dragonfly Tea Cottage and Nikki, owner of Rising Stars Dance Academy, are just a few who have gotten Love-Squared flying. There are so many other people who have shown their support. I can’t begin to list them all. Today I add one more whom I need to mention and thank in person. A big thank you to Regina Jankowski and the Family Center at the Toledo Art Museum for the amazing yarn donation. I can’t even describe what went through my head when I saw the piles of yarn. I think I was speechless for five full minutes. The more than generous donation allows us to supply yarn to those who want to help Love-Squared, but are unable to take on the expense of supplies.

On a different note, while at the Dragonfly Tea Cottage, (I almost called it the Dragonfly Knitting Cottage) I counted 65 squares! That is only 10 squares away from Jennifer’s goal of 75. You are all amazing. As a personal challenge to you all, I wonder if you can donate 100 squares total by September 25.

While I was at at the Dragonfly…

Baskets of Love from Dragonfly

Some funky, fun squares

After a day at the zoo with the kiddos I got a date night with my eldest child. Acoustic and poetry night at the Dragonfly Tea Cottage. Poetry night is one of my favorite “get away from the house for adult time” events. Since Indigo was playing I took Charlie to check it out. He and I had a great evening of music, apricot tea and dessert. If you get to pop in to the Dragonfly for lunch you have to try the bread pudding. Amazing doesn’t begin to cover it!

While I was there I took some pictures of the over flowing baskets of squares. The out pouring of support from the loyal Dragonfly family has been amazing. They are going to reach their goal of 75 squares. Yesterday, a customer dropped off 30 squares. Can you believe it? 30! That brings them to an approximate total of 42.  Keep it going Dragonfly!

A huge thank you to Linda and Conny for their continued support and donations. Their squares, along with Dragonfly’s, bring us to a total of 120! Enough for four afghans! We are 2 afghans, a mere 60 squares, away from our immediate goal of 6. Of course I would love to blow that goal out of the water and I know we can do it.

On behalf of Love-Squared and the Family House recipients of the finished afghans, a heartfelt thank you.

Finally, a bit of organization

I may not be the most organized person alive, but I do try. After months of fighting tangled yarn and digging to the bottom of a seemingly endless project bag, I finally did something about it. I came across the perfect pattern for a needle case.  http://multicrafty.blogspot.com/2007/09/knitting-needle-case-tutorial.html. I wanted something to hold all my needles, not just the short ones. This tutorial was easy to follow and has everything I was looking for. Now My needles will be in one place when I need them. Not stabbing through the bottom of my bag and ripping my comforter!

A letter from Family House

Friday night knitting at the Dragonfly

Jessica Working Hard

Squares from the Dragonfly Family

It’s finally Friday! That means knit night at the Dragonfly Tea Cottage. One of my favorite weekly events. There is not a better way to end the long, crazy week than sitting on the front porch, sipping some iced chai and chatting with wonderful people.

While Jessica was concentrating on her purple square, I was inside with Jen, looking at all the great squares her patrons have donated. We also discussed a knit along at the Dragonfly soon. Details will follow as soon as I get them set. Until then, I hope you can join us on the porch every Friday from 6-8pm.
