Love-Squared is in need of knitters and crocheters to make squares to become patchwork afghans for our homeless children.
We need 8 inch squares made from any color and pattern. Since these squares are for a child’s afghan, think soft, cuddly, and easily washable. Please do not use perfumes, dryer sheets, scented additions when mailing squares. It gets to be quite overpowering during shipping.
This is a great stash buster project and a great way to practice a new stitch or learn to knit! 8 inches, That’s all it takes.
If you aren’t a knitter and can’t crochet, you can still help Love-Squared. Donate yarn to a knitter, crocheter or send it to me. A single ball of yarn will make several squares.
Spread the word! We rely on people to tell people who will tell more people about us.
Finished squares can be mailed to one of several addresses.

Did I see somewhere that Love Squared is involved in a project making navy blue scarves for a school?
Hello Susan.
We are not making scarves as a group, but there are several of our members and supporters who donate to other causes as well. Love-Squared concentrates on using donated squares to make blankets for our country’s homeless children.
Thank you for the inquiry.
Leah
I am just getting started with this project and thought I read someplace that if we used x kind of yarn we should label those squares but I can’t find the note. Will you help me. I am leaving a square in my new favorite knit shop — Starlight knitting society, in Portland Oregon — and the owner will explain about the project to visiting knitters. We are happy to see there is a local donation site.
This is a great project.
Hello Mary!
Thank you for your question. Yes, please label squares that are made of wool/wool blends, or those with special washing instructions. It helps us keep non-acrylic squares together for easier care, as well as keeping wool away from those with an allergy.
I have only been in Portland a bit under two years, recently moving to North Portland. I will have to check out the Starlight Knitting Society. I have yet to visit any of the local yarn shops, but I plan to do a lot of shopping this spring and summer.
Please let me know if you or anyone has any more questions. I will be happy to answer them.
Leah
I wouldn’t love to donate some squares. Is this an on-going donation?
*would
Hi! I am getting several of my girlfriends together to form a knitting group a few times a month, and we are looking for good causes to donate to. Do you have any special needs right now? We are always happy to make 8″ squares, but if there’s a push for hats or slippers or washcloths, we can do that, too. We’re just outside of Portland – should we send the items to the Portland address you gave on the square collection page? Thanks much!
Jennifer
Hello,
I apologize for taking so long to get back to you. The portland address is fantastic. We only take squares right now, but I can suggest contacting local shelters and food closets regarding hats, mittens, slippers, etc.
Hi
Just found your website. Wondering if you are still collecting squares? I have a lot of left over yarn that I can use for your blankets.
Hope to hear from you soon
Susan
Yes! We are still accepting squares.
Are you still accepting squares? Please let us know as we are making yarn purchases to complete our donations for this year (2020). Thank you for your response.
Hi,
I apologize for taking so long to reply. Working, L2, Covid, and 4 kids schooling at home has created some major time issues. Yes, we are still accepting squares. Thank you so much for your support and patience.
Leah
I am trying to connect with Leah, I sent her an email but haven’t heard back
Want to know how things are going before I start knitting squares again
Please respond
Hi, Mary.
Yes, we are still accepting squares. I did reply to your email, but it may have gone to spam or the internet void. We are still working as quickly as we can to get squares turned into blankets for homeless youth. The Portland goal is to have enough ready to donate to Hope House by December.
What is going on? Those messsges are from 2016.
Is this still ongoing? Did Leah pass on?
Would love to help there are family shelters on every state .
Hello, I’m still here. I am trying to keep up on working full-time, having 4 kids schooling at home, plus love_Squared. It’s taking a toll. We are still going strong and accepting squares. Tent City Toledo has been cancelled due to Covid, but the shelters have been contacted and will be taking our blankets.
Hi, I’d love to help. Do yo want the ends left loose or wove in?
We appreciate ends woven in.
Thank you!
How many stitches to cast on for 4 ply with #8 knitting needles?
So glad I found this site!
Blessings and Thank You.
I have a tight gauge and I think I cast on close to 30. It’s been a while since I counted. Next time I will swatch and post my gauge.
Hi, I would love to knit squares for your charity. I’m not a very experienced knitter only started a few years ago, please could you help me if I’m using D K yarn how many stitches do I need for the 8 inch square. Thanks x
It has been a while since I swatched, but I believe I cast on around 28 – 32 stitches. I am a super tight knitter so my gauge may be way off from yours.
Thanks!
Hello,
Do you have square patterns you would like me to use?
Thank you,
Ann
Hello,
Any pattern is great. The only thing we ask is they be as close to 8 inches as possible. The yarn should be something you would cuddle with. No smelly, scratchy fibers or stiff dish cotton.
Thanks,
Leah
Are yo7 still taking squares?
yes we are! 8-inch square. Any color or pattern, but please no itchy yarn or dish cotton.
Thanks!
Hi! Do you want the squares blocked? I don’t mind doing it, but am not going to bother if it’s not necessary. Thanks!
blocking is never necessary.
Thank you
Are you still accepting squares? Are you still an active charity?
yes we are. All locations are collecting squares.
Thank you!
Hello, I would like to help but was wondering if this donating opportunities are still available
We are always accepting 8″ squares. We work all year round collecting and seaming blankets for donation.
Thank you.
Wondering what addresses are. They are a bit confusing to me. I have been mailing to warm up america, thought I’d change it up a bit and mail to Michigan. Merry Christmas!
You can send to either of the michigan addresses. This one is great.
